God's Recovery Store

by John G.

I was staggering along life's highway, sickened to the core.
One day I saw a sign that read God's Recovery Store.
Curiously, I got closer, and the door opened wide.
And half coming to my senses, I was standing inside.

I saw a host of strangers, they were sitting everywhere.
One handed me a basket and said, "Welcome, shop with care."
Everything I really needed was right there in that store.
And what I couldn't carry, I could always come back for more.

First, I got understanding … love was in the same row.
Farther down was patience, which I was out of long ago.
I got a box or two of wisdom, a bag or two of faith.
I just couldn't miss God's spirit, which was all over the place.

I stopped to get some Higher Power; I had so much to face.
My basket was getting full, so I added some needed grace.
I didn't forget fellowship … heard that true friends are free!
But before I knew where to find them, they came to me.

Then I started up to the counter to pay my recovery bill,
For I thought I had everything needed to do my Master's will.
As I went up the aisle, I saw prayer, and just had to put that in.
For I knew when I stepped outside, I'd be tempted again.

Honesty and willingness were plentiful; they were on the last shelf.
Then I was handed sobriety, for I couldn't reach it by myself.
Finally, I said to the storekeeper, "Now how much do I owe?"
He just smiled and said, "Just take them wherever you go."

Returning his smile, again I asked, "How much do I really owe?"
He replied, "My friend, your bill was paid 2000 years ago."
